HISTORY
Giuseppe Fanara
Giuseppe Fanara is the Italian craftsman par excellence, who has his own workshop where he works with leather and sells the finished products directly, with the assistance of his son Mirko, who is learning his father's art and trade and who, in the future, will give continuity to this great tradition of artisan craftsmanship.
"I left school in 1979 at the age of 16 and I started working in a leather workshop near my house where I learned the craft from a local artisan. He passed the art and the tradition on to me."
Giuseppe says: “I have always loved my work: I find it very satisfying and I do it gladly. I create an object with my own hands, I develop it and I see it completed. I would like at least one of my two sons to continue in this wonderful craft."
"I mainly make coin cases but I also make business card holders, pocket and desk pen holders, glasses cases and leather boxes. All my products can be customised to the clients liking. "
"Fortunately I have been able to go on working in the way I prefer and I am very happy. Just a short time ago, I would never have thought that I would even go to Japan to show my work and that my work would be so appreciated that clients return over and over, sometimes after years. "
"I feel free in Florence and that is exactly what I like. I have to do the work so I like to organise it as I please. My clients like my products probably because they see they are well-finished with attention paid to detail and high quality workmanship even though they are very small, pocket sized. "
"Though they are middle price bracket products, affordable to everyone, the quality of the workmanship is evident. In my opinion the fact that a product is handmade, well made and well finished is more important than its design. This adds value. My products are all round and smooth, there are no sharp corners, they are soft and seamless."
"I use Florentine “cuoietto” a type of leather tanned using a technique which is said to have been invented by the friars in Santa Croce in 1200. We only use leather which is vegetable-tanned in Tuscany and certified and gauranteed by the quality label of the Consorzio Vera Pelle Italiana Conciata al Vegetale (Genuine Italian Vegetable Tanned Leather Consortium)."
" I have taken part in the “Festa Italiana” fair sponsored by the Institute for Foreign Trade (Istituto del Commercio Estero) and organised by Hankyu Department Stores in Umeda and Osaka various times. The “Festa Italiana” fair is the Italian trade show par excellence where many Italian products are exhibited and much appreciated by visitors. "
Now, after thirty five years of work, Giuseppe has been awarded the Master Artisan certificate which is acknowledged by the Chamber of Commerce of Florence and the Region of Tuscany.
Giuseppe's workshop is also involved in the Art Craft's Observatory, organised by the Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze, with whom he takes part in various didactic and cultural projects.
